Kaukauna High School Soccer
Varsity Boys Head Coach
What inspired you to get into coaching soccer?
I was inspired by several teachers and coaches I met in my career as a student athlete. I saw a need for quality technical training in the classroom and on the pitch, and I knew that teaching/coaching would be my calling in life.
How does youth club soccer prepare players for the high school level?
Communicating the need for more small sided play, and technical work over tactics and talking. The days of constant tactical chatter and large sided scrimmaging are over. An increased focus on technical work and short sided (counter attacking) games has improved our product on the field. Our student athletes continue to improve in all facets of the game thanks to a new youth soccer focus on gaining tactical awareness through technical work.
What is your most memorable moment from coaching so far?
Winning back to back undefeated conference, tournament and state championships at a local junior college ranks high up on the list. Helping the Neenah program rise back up to undefeated conference and regional champions was also a blessing. Winning coach of the year in 2009,2010 and 2023 were achievements that I still hold dear. Sorry, that is more than one!
If you could train with any pro player or manager, who would it be?
I would love to train with John Terry and Frank Lampard. I simply enjoy their no nonsense approach to the game as players and now as coaches. Their tenacity on the pitch was something to witness!
"Connection, consistency and team pace can help overcome any deficiencies in your individual game. You have to enjoy the people you train with and love the work it takes to compete. Be sure to show gratitude through any grief and have a "starting now" mentality daily."
